The history of San Miguel de Allende is full of tradition, honor and spirit.
It played a pivotal role in the Mexican War of Independence and was the first municipality to be declared free of Spanish rule. An influx of notable artists in the 20th century helped turn it into the renowned arts destination that it is today.
In 2008, San Miguel de Allende was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Spanish Colonial architecture and historical significance.
In 2013, Condé Nast Traveler announced the winners of its 26th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. The very top spot was seized by San Miguel de Allende, “The best City in The World”, thanks to its great atmosphere, excellent restaurants, culture and ambiance galore.
San Miguel de Allende offers every chance to enjoy art and entertainment.
At the heart of the city – or, el centro – is El Jardín, the town square. And towering majestically above el centro, with its ornate architecture and stately presence, is La Parroquia, a 17th century cathedral and one of the most admired tourist attractions in San Miguel. Around these two landmarks is where most of the cultural and religious activities take place. The city is home to fine art institutions such as Bellas Artes and Instituto Allende where both aficionados and novices can explore and express their creativity. Throughout the year, there are many traditional festivities and music and art festivals that enrich the town´s everyday life.
